Pairing: Chanseul [Chanyeol and Seulgi]
Concept: Band!Au [Completed] Two dry knocks echoed in the room before Chanyeol lifted his head to see who it was. He hadn't heard her because of the loud music swallowing her voice the first time she talked and simply kept playing until she knocked again very loudly. Chanyeol couldn’t tell how long he made her wait, Seulgi could have been standing there for a minute, maybe five or even more and she still would have the same wide smile on her face to greet him. She was always so nice with him. “I’m sorry for bothering you, I wasn’t sure if the last rehearsal would be here or at the auditorium.” It had been a few days since she took part in the band but Chanyeol still couldn't get used to her presence and it was a first for the overly confident leader of the Broken Hearted band. Seulgi didn't only make Chanyeol feel awkward, he was always very self-conscious around her and quieter than usual which made him seem cold. "You didn't have to come, this is a rehearsal for the musicians," he told her as she finally stepped into the band's wide practice room. Chanyeol was unusually not sitting in front of his golden ribbed drums but on a chair near the door with a guitar playing a few chords. “The performance is tonight so we had a few things to check, I don’t usually make the singers come to the last rehearsal since its the day they have to perform I don’t want to uselessly stress them.” "Wendy told me she usually comes so I thought I should do the same," Seulgi explained. She stood in the centre of the room without really knowing where to put herself. If she went to sit at the back far from him it would be rude but she didn't want to make Chanyeol uncomfortable by sitting right next to him. "It's not because Wendy does something that you have to do it too, you're replacing her on stage not as a person." “Yes of course, I'm sorry. I didn’t mean to sound like I was," Seulgi apologized before looking down. "Don't apologize," Chanyeol said as soon, realizing that he sounded more harsh than he intended to. "It's not something to apologize for, it was a good initiative." Seulgi thanked Chanyeol with a slight bow and remained as awkward as ever standing alone in the room while the tall senior continued to play with his guitar. He didn't know what to say and he wished he could invite her to sit next to him, maybe they could talk a bit and he would reassure her about the dreadful performance she would have to do tonight. Maybe he would even teach her a thing or two about guitars or how he created Broken Hearted if she was interested, he just wanted to hear Seulgi’s voice and talk to her. But nothing could come out of Chanyeol's mouth, he was frozen like always. "I didn't know you could play that," she smiled. "How can you play so many instruments?" "It's not hard," he mumbled. "Wendy said you were self-taught,” Seulgi commented as she hesitantly took a step towards him to see the guitar better. Chanyeol nodded a bit bashfully. "You're the leader of a well-known university band, a successful music major who already composes music and a self-taught musician who can play various instruments," she enumerated. "And I'm good at sports," he proudly added. "I'm not good at any of those," she shyly said before opting to sit next to him. “You must be a genius or something.” "But you're an amazing singer," Chanyeol retorted as soon. "You wouldn't be here if you weren't." "I hope I'm not too bad considering that's my major." "No you're great, really great," he assured her. In fact, Seulgi's voice was what he liked the most about her. It was full of emotion, clear and it could be powerful or very soft depending of what the song required. Her technique wasn't at Wendy's level but it was beautiful in a different way, so beautiful that it mesmerized Chanyeol. He didn't hesitate one second to take her at the auditions after hearing her sing Dollby Kangta. Even if Wendy had recommended Seulgi to him already and requested that she would replace her for the school's festival performance while she rested because of her sore throat, Chanyeol wanted to be fair and made Seulgi audition like everyone else nevertheless. In the end, it didn't change anything because she got it and the result was the same but for Chanyeol, everything changed. He completely fell for her voice as soon as he heard it but he soon realized that Seulgi's voice was not the only charming thing about her. He had acknowledged the fact that she was pretty a long time ago when she started to come to their concerts to see Wendy but he never tried to know more about her. Chanyeol didn’t think much of Seulgi at first but after getting to know her a bit, he fell for her. First, it was her voice and then her personality. If Chanyeol had an ideal type, he figured it would be Seulgi: nice, genuine and passionate. He knew it was crazy to fall for a person he barely knew and the fact that it all happened in a few days was shocking to him too but he knew what the nervousness he felt when she was around meant. The stuttered words, the unusual loss of confidence, the pounding heart and the sweaty hands were not just a clue, they were an answer to a question. Do I like her? “Are you nervous for tonight?” he hesitantly asked her. “Just a bit,” Seulgi smiled. “I know it’s going to get a lot worse when I’ll be backstage though.” “Just take a few deep breaths and try to think of something else,” he advised her. “Anyways, if anything happens I’m right behind you.” “Would you stop the show if I forgot the songs’ lyrics or something?” “I hope I won’t have to go that far and that it doesn’t happen but I guess I could,” he tried to reassure her. “But you’ll be fine, I’m sure everything will be fine.” Seulgi chuckled. “D-do you know how to play guitar?” Chanyeol said after a pause. Seulgi shook her head and gaped when he handed her his large acoustic guitar. “Maybe I could teach you a few things, if you’re not too bored of course, until the concert, if you don’t have anything else to do,” he added. “Really? You would do that?” Seulgi blurted. “I learnt a few things from a friend but I can’t do anything else so that would be very helpful.” He didn’t have the time to stay puzzled by Seulgi’s fast reaction as she started playing the only tune she learnt ages ago. It sounded pretty terrible and she looked very embarrassed by her lack of skills but Chanyeol couldn’t help but to smile at the sight. “I’ll show you how to do it,” he chuckled. Seulgi and Chanyeol spent the whole afternoon playing in the isolated Broken Hearted rehearsal room until Chanyeol had to leave for a last check up with the auditorium’s staff and told her to meet later at the concert. “Don’t overthink too much and just do what you usually do,” he told her. “The more pressure you put on yourself and the less enjoyable the experience gets, just have fun.” Chanyeol didn’t know where this sudden confidence came from but he was glad he had it when Seulgi seemed stressed before they parted ways. She nodded and thanked him for being so nice with her. To him, it was a given and he wished he could do even more but to her, he probably seemed naturally cordial or something. Seulgi left and Chanyeol returned backstage to prepare for the last rehearsal before the performance. Time went by quickly and before he realized it, everything ended perfectly: Seulgi did well and the crowd seemed to like her too. The band members all congratulated her and she even teared up a bit (but she said that it was because something got caught in her eyes and it was in fact true). As for Chanyeol, he was stuck fixing a few things with the staff and couldn’t see her before the end. He tried to finish quickly his duties as a leader before going around to look for Seulgi as he had something important to tell her. “Wait a second,”Chanyeol said as he ran to the temporary lead vocalist who was about to leave. Seulgi had her bag with her, she had already changed her clothes and she had already thanked the staff for taking care of her for tonight: she was ready to leave. Chanyeol didn’t want to look too nervous but it was useless. He had looked for her everywhere, even going all the way to the other musicians’ waiting room in hope to find the girl he was planning to confess to. He was supposed to do it right after their performance in front of a thousand students (it was more romantic) but Seulgi disappeared right after thanking the other Broken Hearted’s band members. “Yes?” she asked with a confused expression. “Ah! That’s right, I was going to thank you for this amazing opportunity later because I couldn’t find you,” she embarrassedly revealed. “I got lost backstage and found my way after a staff told me I was in a restricted area.” “I’m not here for that, it’s fine,” Chanyeol quickly dismissed. If he didn’t say it soon, he felt like the words would never come out of his mouth. “It’s not fine!” Seulgi retorted. “I really look ungrateful now and it would be very disrespectful of me to just leave without ever thanking you for everything you did for me. I will never be grateful enough, it’s not like I would have been able to sing in front of so many people without your help,” Seulgi bowed to the older student. “It’s not that Seulgi, really, it’s fine,” Chanyeol said. He felt like his confidence was disappearing by the second. “I’d be glad if you could pass by to the band’s room more often,” he awkwardly started. “I can?” “Definitely,” Chanyeol nodded. “It would be nice to see you even after tonight’s performance. You could maybe come to the rehearsals or stay a few minutes just to say hi, it doesn’t have to be the last time we talk.” What the hell am I saying? “I mean not only me but the others too, you could say hi to them too,” Chanyeol quickly added. “Of course, that would be great,” Seulgi smiled. She gave him one of those heartfelt and genuine smile that could erase any bad day. It was the same radiant smile she used to thank him for taking her at the auditions and Chanyeol knew he wouldn’t forget this smile any time soon. “I w-wanted to tell you that you did really well tonight,” he stuttered. He didn’t really know how to start his confession or anything that would lead to the fatal moment so he just said the first thing that crossed his mind. “Seriously? Honestly, I was so nervous I thought I was going to faint,” Seulgi blushed. “I didn’t know there would be so many people. Broken Hearted is really a major hit after all,” she lightly chuckled. “Not really,” he embarrassedly said. “But I really hope to see you more often, it would mean a lot to me,” Chanyeol sincerely continued. Seulgi could sense the sudden serious atmosphere that took place as Chanyeol looked at her intently. “Then, I will try to come to your concerts,” she promised. “I won’t miss them.” “I know this is very sudden and maybe I’m burdening you with all this, I probably am, I definitely am burdening you,” Chanyeol worriedly rambled on. “No, it’s fine, I like to talk with you,” she reassured him. “I like you Seulgi,” he admitted. “I know it’s only been a few days since we know each other but I’m not joking, I really think I like you.” Seulgi blinked twice and seemed a bit a taken aback but she didn’t seem as surprised as Chanyeol thought she would be. He expected her to blush, to reject him right away or to simply pretend she hadn’t heard anything at worst. Seulgi pursed her lips before giving him an angelic smile. “I like you too Chanyeol.” It was Chanyeol’s turn to blink and to look at her a bit surprised. Could it really be that easy? Sure, Chanyeol was popular and he knew he wasn’t so bad of a lad, maybe a 10 out of 10 for someone with good eyes and normal standards but he still didn’t expect her to react so positively. “You’re a really good person, Chanyeol. I mean it, you’re just sonice,” Seulgi continued. “I can’t believe you didn’t even get mad at Wendy at all when you learnt she recklessly got sick after going out with me a few days before the festival, you just planned sudden auditions—” “I didn’t she know got sick because she went out,” Chanyeol frowned. “—and you helped me so much to feel better and get rid of my useless worries and nervousness,” she smiled. “You gave me advices and tried to make me feel comfortable in the band even though I was just replacing someone. You are a very reliable and friendly sunbae, there is no reason for me to not like you.” Chanyeol gulped with difficulty. “That’s not what I mean Seulgi,” he tried to explain. “I said that I liked you in the way people say they lovesomeone else.” “Yes, I love you too,” she repeated with an innocent frown. “Like or love isn’t it the same? I appreciate you.” Chanyeol wanted to sigh but he had to keep it in to not show how disappointed he truly was. It wasn’t the fact that he didn’t succeed into conveying his feelings properly to the girl he liked that bothered him, but the fact that she didn’t even envisage the possibility that he liked her in a romantic way that really got the best of him. If Seulgi never thought that Chanyeol could be interested in her or even imagined something between them after the time they spent together, then it’s probably because she never thought of him in that way: she never saw Chanyeol as a potential love interest. “Weren’t you on your way home? It’s indeed late, you should be careful as you go home,” he suddenly said as Seulgi blinked at him. “That’s it? That’s all you wanted to talk about?” “Yes, take care Seulgi.” “You too Chanyeol,” she waved at him before turning her back to walk towards the door. Chanyeol heaved a deep sigh and sat down on the nearest chair he could find. “I used to wonder at first why the band was called Broken Hearted but it’s not too hard to guess.” Chanyeol heard a soft voice say from behind. The tall band leader turned to see Wendy looking back at him with a warm smile. “Your heart is too big for your own good.” “I didn’t make myself clear,” Chanyeol defended. “She just didn’t understand.” “The answer would have been the same,” Wendy shrugged. “I told you to not waste your time with her.” “I thought you were saying that just because you didn’t want me to date your friend,” Chanyeol sighed. “You literally fall for anyoneChanyeol, this has to be a disease.” “You told me the same thing the last time,” the tall leader grunted. “I don’t do it on purpose.” “Maybe you should try to focus on the right people,” Wendy said. “Maybe you’re not looking at the right place.” “Or maybe I’ll just never find someone I like who likes me back and who doesn’t want to get with me for superficial reasons.” “It’s fine, you’ll be fine, Seulgi just wasn’t the right person for you,” Wendy patted the giant’s shoulder. “If I can get over it then you too.” “What do you mean I?” Chanyeol slightly frowned. “You liked her too?” Wendy sighed before walking past Chanyeol's confused face. “I mean a heartbreak. You two would make a really nice couple,” she rolled her eyes. “You think so?” “No,” Wendy chuckled.
